Blog Post #3: The Eight Values of Free Expression

Freedom of expression is one of the most powerful aspects of our democracy, and the eight values of free expression help explain why it’s so essential. Each value highlights a different way free expression shapes society, and a few of them really stood out to me.

What Resonates Most?

For me, the Marketplace of Ideas feels especially relevant. The idea that truth emerges from the free exchange of ideas is something we see every day on social media. Platforms like TikTok or Twitter are modern marketplaces, where debates happen in real-time. That said, it’s clear the system isn’t perfect—algorithms can amplify false information just as easily as facts, which challenges the idea that truth always wins out.

Another value that feels personal is Self-Realization and Individual Autonomy. This one is all about how freedom of expression helps people grow as individuals. Social media allows so much room for creativity and self-expression—it’s where people share their art, humor, or personal experiences with the world. It’s amazing how platforms can foster connection and individuality at the same time.

Why It’s Personal

The value of Promoting Tolerance is one I’ve experienced firsthand. Growing up in New York City, I was surrounded by different perspectives and opinions. It wasn’t always easy to listen to things I disagreed with, but it taught me empathy and how to engage with others respectfully. In today’s divided world, this feels more important than ever.

Seeing These Values in Action

One value I notice in action constantly is Checking Government Power. Investigative journalists and whistleblowers play a huge role in holding leaders accountable. Just think about how many stories about government overreach or corruption wouldn’t exist without a free press. It’s a reminder of how vital freedom of the press is to democracy.

I also see Protecting Dissent every day, especially with protests and activism. Whether it’s climate protests or social justice movements, the ability to challenge authority is one of the most empowering aspects of free expression.

Connecting to Technology

Social media is both a blessing and a challenge for free expression. It’s a tool for Self-Realization and the Marketplace of Ideas, but it also raises tough questions. For example, who decides what gets taken down for misinformation? The Marketplace of Ideas assumes the truth will rise to the top, but that’s tricky in a world where fake news can spread faster than facts.

At the same time, platforms can promote Tolerance by exposing us to different ideas, but they can also create echo chambers that make us less open-minded. It’s a double-edged sword that forces us to think critically about how we use these tools.

Final Thoughts

The eight values of free expression aren’t just theories—they’re things we see play out in real life every day. They shape our society, our interactions, and our future. As we navigate challenges like misinformation, polarization, and censorship, these values remind us why freedom of expression is worth protecting.

Blog Post #2: Understanding the Supreme Court:

Supreme Court of the United States | History, Rules, Opinions, & Facts | Britannica

After watching the video about the history and workings of the U.S. Supreme Court, I came away with a much better understanding of how it operates and why it’s so important.

What I Learned

I didn’t realize how much power the Supreme Court has when it comes to interpreting the Constitution. I also learned that judicial review wasn’t explicitly written into the Constitution—it was established through Marbury v. Madison. That blew my mind!

Biggest Takeaway

The Court’s role as the final interpreter of the Constitution is huge. It acts as a check on the other branches of government and helps protect individual rights. That responsibility makes its decisions incredibly impactful.

Most Surprising Thing

I was shocked by how political the nomination and confirmation process for justices has become. The idea that a single appointment can shape rulings for decades really hit me.

How My Perspective Changed

I used to think of the Supreme Court as this faraway institution, but now I see how it’s deeply tied to history and everyday life. It’s not just reactive—it’s actively shaping the country.

This video made me appreciate just how critical the Supreme Court is to our democracy and why its decisions matter so much.
